Learn more about our Summer internship
MEVO’s most extensive, intensive, and noteworthy program is our annual summer internship. Each year we interview and accept college-age students into our two and a half month-long environmental empowerment internship program, which runs from late May to Mid-August. The summer is designed to give students both professional and actionable hands-on experience in the environmental field to empower them as they prepare for their future careers and to offer them a diverse first-time field experience. Our summer interns are intentionally made vital to the workflow of our summer season not only to help assist with the season’s rush but more importantly to give them a thorough understanding of how a not-for-profit runs its day-to-day operations. The summer internship is crafted for individuals looking to hold a career in the environmental field and for anyone desiring an enriching summer experience that offers extensive time outdoors while developing professional skills such as public speaking, volunteer management, and teaching to large groups.
The interns we accept each year are divided into Farm Crew and Trail Crew. Each crew is led by a trained MEVO staff member and provides interns with intensive experience in various sectors of the environmental field. By focusing our crews on specialized work, our interns can end their summer knowledgeable and accomplished in their area.
The summer initiates with two weeks of training. The first week includes team building, public speaking practice, and group reflections. During that week the interns, are introduced to MEVO as an organization. We also bring in local environmental activists, farmers, professors, and environmental career professionals to give our interns an example of careers they can hold after their internship ends. The second week of training is crew-specific and each crew spends a week together learning important skills for the summer and taking small trips to observe others doing the work they will be performing. After training, our interns work three days a week. Additionally, we take them on a to our good friends and partner not-for-profit Merck Forest and Farmland Center in Rupert, Vermont where we camp, work, and spend time together immersed in their 3,300-acre property.
Our interns end our summer by presenting a project of their choosing which conveys the impact the summer has had on them. They leave the program with a heightened sense of accomplishment as well as a network of their fellow interns, MEVO Staff, and friends of our organization.
What People Are Saying
“My experience with MEVO was my first internship ever, and it honestly changed my life. Working alongside Eric, Isabel, Violet, and Allie was fun! I loved working outside in the sunshine, especially when we went to Maine and got to crush rocks. We went camping, we hiked a lot, we weeded a lot, we enjoyed meals together and shared our dreams. Not only did I learn that I am capable of working hard, I learned that there are so many different routes to success and working in an office isn’t the only way. Because of the people I met through the internship, I now look forward to having my own homestead one day after I explore the world & continue farming along the way. I am forever grateful for MEVO!”
— Ciera Crespo, Summer Farm Crew 2018
“MEVO was awesome! Not only is MEVO coordinated by incredible people, but I made some great friends with other interns that I hope to carry with me through the rest of my life. From building trails to planting fruits and veggies, to hiking through beautiful Acadia National Park, MEVO provides plenty of opportunities to become connected with the environment and your local community while also bonding with potential life-long friends!”
— Patrick Robertson, Summer Trail Crew 2018
“If you are looking for a sign to apply for this internship, here it is! I can say with 100% certainty that doing this internship resulted in the best summer of my life. It didn't come without its hardships, but I think it was such a life-changing experience because it challenged so many conceptions I had about myself beforehand. I found so much meaning in myself and the world around me during this internship. Days spent in the sun, learning about the Earth and how to plant food, long hikes through beautiful forests were only facets of what made this experience satisfying, amazing, and fulfilling to me.”
— Dominica LaRocco, Summer Farm Crew 2017
"I came into the MEVO Summer Intern program expecting to learn about farming but gained knowledge and experiences in so many areas. Everyday was different, fun, challenging, and gave me a chance to escape the routine of everyday life. The memories created with the tight-knit group of interns and the inspiration received from speakers truly fueled my passion for the environment and sustainability."
